From
September 1998 to November 1999, the Abbey of Noirlac hosted an exhibition of more than
fifty pieces by Robert Barriot, including his monumental enamels. Admirably preserved and
restored with the greatest respect for its original character, this jewel of Cistercian
architecture, built in 1150, provided the ideal setting for the great works of the Master
Enameller. The purity and sobriety of the Abbey's lines, its meditative atmosphere and the
sheer elegance of the stonework all contribute to give this exhibition the tremendous
space it deserved. Also, the stained glass windows and the innovative lighting system
specially designed by Frédéric Barriot underlined its radiance. The enamel's sacred
character and medieval inspiration, combined with the Abbey's sheer grandeur made for a
unique experience.
